Eheim Jager TruTemp Submersible Heater

Calibrating your Eheim Jager Heater

The reason Jager heaters have a reputation for being the most accurate heaters available is the ability to recalibrate the heater.

The factory setting should be reasonably close but if you moved either the red arrow or the blue dial before reading the instructions you may need to recalibrate the heater.

  • Features a shatterproof glass construction
  • TruTemp dial adjusts from 65° to 93° F
  • Thermo safety control enables 'running dry' protection
  • On/off indicator light verifies heater functions
  • Includes mounting bracket and suction cups
  • Simple and safe recalibration (±2 °C)
  • Generous 5.6 foot cord

19" rod for aquariums 159 - 264 gallons

300 Watts

Precisely regulated, constant water temperature is very important for the comfort and success of your aquarium inhabitants. The Jäger TruTemp adjustable heater is an ultra-modern electronic thermal device offering today's best technology. Designed for use in both freshwater and saltwater aquarium, Jäger TruTemp fully-submersible heaters include these great features:

Shatterproof glass construction - Made with laboratory-grade glass, TruTemp heaters are free of pollutants, resistant to chemical and biological substances, and able to withstand extreme temperature fluctuations. Their glass jackets also enlarge the heating surface and ensure even heat distribution.

TruTemp Dial - Temperature can be precisely adjusted from 18° to 34° C (65° to 93° F). Using the TruTemp dial with readjustment ring, the user can recalibrate the heater for a precise temperature reading. Control accuracy is +/- 0.5° C.

Thermo Safety Control - This safety mechanism enables 'running-dry' protection. The heater will shut off when removed from the water, and resume functioning upon return.

On/Off Indicator Light - This convenient feature eliminates guessing and enables the user to verify heater function without getting their hands wet!

Each Jäger TruTemp Heater also includes a mounting bracket and suction cups for secure and flexible placement within your aquarium system. Lastly, an extra long power cord accommodates most applications.

I purchased this heater with high expectations as Eheim is (was?) one of the higher quality manufacturers of aquarium supplies. However, I must now say I will not purchase another Eheim product as the heater was defective and, while manufacturing defects do happen, the attitude I received from tech support was the final straw.

This heater allows for recalibration if the temperature of the water in the tank does not match the temperature at which the heater is set. After having the heater in the tank 24 hours, the water temperature was much higher than the setting so I followed the directions for recalibration. After several days of adjustments, the recalibration ring was set as far as it would go, the temperature ring was set at 75 degrees and, the unanimous reading of the 3 different types of thermometers was still 79.8. While I can continue to set the temperature lower to reach the desired 78 degrees, the accuracy of this heater should not be that far off and I question its reliability. One nice thing about this heater is, as far as precision is concerned, when it settles on a temperature (right or wrong) it does hold to the tenth of a degree.

I recently emailed Eheim expressing my concerns regarding the lack of accuracy and requested a replacement heater considering I was only a couple months into a 3-year warranty. The response I received was to restore the heater to factory settings for 24 hours then let them know what the temperature was. Since the temperature was already running higher than set, returning the heater to factory settings would put the water temperature in the high 80s - low 90s. Not wanting to kill my fish (including a 14-year old clown loach and 3 near hand-sized angel fish), I called tech support this morning and got absolutely no where. As per the rep, they won''t honor their warranty if I don''t reset the heater to factory settings and verify the temperature yet they aren''t about to replace my fish. As I do not have a back up heater, testing the Eheim in a bucket is not an option, neither is returning it to them for verification. The rep I spoke with was rude, unapologetic and refused to let me speak to a supervisor as he said I had no reason. Fortunately, Amazon came through and offered to refund my money. Between the lack of accuracy of the heater and, even more so, the complete lack of customer service, the new heater will NOT be an Eheim!

I have never written a review before but thought this would be great information for anyone that reads it. When this item was purchased In February it worked flawlessly, i set the temperature as i needed it and it was great. 7 months later i had adjusted the temp up 1-2 degrees on the twist knob to accommodate new fish placed in my setup. The unit then never stopped at the set temperature and continued to heat the water up to about 89 degrees (up from 82) when i caught it, it was still on and heating. Half of my fish have died. I have messed around with it a little bit now and it seems that something internal is sticking making the unit worthless. So, just a heads up if you have or get one of these and adjust the temp. Keep a close eye on it.

I have 40 years of experience raising salt water and freshwater fish. I purchased this heater because Eheim was historically a great name and very high quality. The reviews showed 83% four or five stars. I needed a new 300 watt heater for my 110 gallon cichlid tank and had good luck with Eheim products in the past. I didn''t mind paying more for a really critical element in my aquarium set up. Plenty of horror stories about heaters malfunctioning and frying everything in the tank. Right out of the box the heater was bad. No mater what temperature you set, the heater stays on continuously. I couldn''t get the heater to turn off with any setting including the lowest. Heater was completely submersed and I even waited overnight to give it another try. Only reason I give it one star is because there is no option for zero stars. I''m hoping that as a very good Amazon customer they will take a return and refund my purchase. They say "You get what you pay for." Apparently no longer the case with Eheim. I guess I should be happy that the heater''s thermostat was stuck "on" instead of working initially and then sticking on and frying all my fish. With a critical item like the heater I always tried to buy the best since a product failure would cost far more than a few extra bucks for the best that money can buy. Hopefully my local aquarium retailer will have something to offer that is higher quality!

Listen, I know what your thinking:

Here''s a guy who is giving this one star because he''s a moron and can''t use an aquarium heater correctly. That''s typically what I think when I read a poor review on Amazon.

Wrong.

I have been keeping reef aquariums for a long time. Back in the day, Eheim Jäger heaters used to be bullet proof. My the times have changed.

I recently had a catastrophe involving one of these heaters (the 300 watt version). I used this heater, with a Ranco controller, in tandem with a 20 year old Rena top light. I bought the jäger back in July of 2015 when I was doing my current build.

Today, my ground fault kept tripping, and during the investigation I found that the wires had melted from the heater body and water had filled the heater tube. My fish were near shocked to death and thankfully have recovered, but all of them were laying sideways on the ground. Thank god none of my kids put their hands in the sump or the tank or they would have received a pretty good jolt.

See the pics below for details. I would never ever in 100 years buy another one of these heaters. Never.

Update: After just under a year of use, this heater malfunctioned and cooked my entire tank, killing over 30 fish. I happened to walk past the tank and could FEEL the heat emanating off the glass. That''s when I noticed all the dead fish. I stuck a thermometer in the tank and it got OVER 100 DEGREES before I pulled it out and yanked the heater. I''m sure the temperature was higher than 100 degrees. I dumped 3 trays of ice cubes into the tank and added 10 gallons of cold water to try and equalize the tank temperature and keep the few fish still alive from dying. I guess I should have returned the heater after the original issues I had listed below. I am so disappointed because usually Eheim products are well-made. If you decide to buy this heater, put it on a timer to force it to shut off once in a while, and use a thermometer alarm system on your tank. Or, just buy a more reliable heater.

Original review: It way overheats the tank. I set it to 73 to begin with just to make sure I didn''t over do it if the heater was a little warm, and my thermometer showed the tank water at 88 degrees! It ended up killing 5 of my fish from heat stress over a few day period even after I removed the heater. I unplugged it and reset it to 63 but was still heating my tank to 81 degrees. After turning it all the way down to its lowest setting I''m finally sitting at the correct water temp of 76-78 degrees. If you don''t want dead fish, make sure and test it in a tank with no fish first.

I spent a long time trying to make a decision between this heater and the Aqueon 06105 Pro Heaters Submersible Aquarium Heater, 50-Watt . Finally, I presented a question here and on the product page for the Aqueon, asking reviewers which they would choose "today" (it''s the end of October 2015 now). Overall, the most resounding answer was to choose the Eheim.

Both of the Eheim and the Aqueon have very attractive features. One thing I thought about was that this heater has a 3 year warranty, while the Aqueon has a life-time warranty. Also, this heater is made with glass as opposed to Aqueon''s aluminum. Despite that, it seemed that the Eheim had better features when it came to even temp control and easy to access and read thermostat controls.

This heater comes pre-set at 80 degrees. After some initial adjusting, I found that it''s keeping my 10 gallon tank at 80 degrees with the thermostat set at 75. The weather is a bit warm right now, so I might have to adjust the thermostat as the temperatures get much colder. One thing to bear in mind is that this 50 watt heater is around nine inches in length. That''s a lot longer than any aquarium heater I''ve used in the 50 watt size.

I really like that I can easily see the numbers on the thermostat dial. Also, because the heater is so tall, the thermostat dial is very close to my aquarium''s surface. All this makes it very easy to set the thermostat without endless fiddling, or worse, having to take the heater out of the aquarium. When the heater is on, there is an easy to see amber indicator light. The two suction cups that affix the heater to the wall are very effective.

So far, I''m very pleased with this product. I will update this review as time passes to let you know how things progress. In the meantime, I''m posting some pictures from my initial experiences.

Um, not sure what is up with Amazon, multiple copies of my phots keep showing up despite my removing them.

As I get older I find that the simpler the better for me. At first I was frustrated with this heater because it''s minimal in a way but after some work it''s keeping the tank nearly precise at 78.2 degrees. I can''t ask for better than that, although the red pointer is a bit off and I can''t figure out a way to move it farther, that''s ok. It just kicks on and off. No flashy lights and it''s only been a couple days but I haven''t had to worry or fiddle with it at all. I also like that it has the older style indicator light. I will keep updates as time passes. It''s probably overkill for a 75g tank considering how Eheim rates them but it seems just fine. These days I just want things that do their jobs without much interaction or concern from me and the Eheim, it turns out, is up to the task.

3 Months in and has water inside the heater. Wow, I expected it to last a little longer than this.

All of my fish started getting sick and luckily I caught it before my hundreds of dollars of saltwater fish died!

I have tried contacting Eheim support about this but no response at all. I thought by purchasing a well known brand that cost more than others that I would get higher quality product and actual support. I was wrong!

Stay away from this heater unless you want to risk destroying your whole tank.

The two Hydor Theo 300W heaters I had suddenly became sporadic in heating my 100 gallon freshwater aquarium a few weeks ago. These heaters were about 5 years old. It turns out when I removed them from the water I saw that one of the heaters had burned out (blast mark on the inside glass tube). So I decided to try these Eheim Jager models since the feature of the recalibration function seemed like a good idea and majority of the reviews I''ve come across have been positive. I ordered two 300W heaters to replace in kind. Well, when they arrived they were packaged in a very long narrow box. Turns out the heater itself is very long, heater itself is almost 20". As a result it cannot be placed straight vertical in the tank like the previous Hydor. Also, on the box there is a list of what capacity of tank each model of heater wattage can support. In this case the 300W supposedly supports 159-264 US gallons. Normal rule of thumb for tropical heating is 3-5w per gallon. Because of the size of the heater alone I was going to just use one, which I did for the first few days. However, the heater seemed to struggle with maintaining the desired temp of about 80°F, even with the recalibration settings. Heater seemed to hold steady @ 78.3°F (make sure you have an accurate thermometer!) and I could not get it above this. Defective heater? Hard to say at this point. So today (May 10) I decided to add the second heater which I was originally going to keep as a back up. I set it to 80°F and have not made any calibrations to it yet. I will see about resetting the first heater once I get I new temp reading. [update, May 20]: with both heaters set to approx. 80°F the water temp is holding at 80.4°F. Fish are happy. As for the quality of the heaters, they seem durable and the power chord is nice and robust, albeit a bit on the chunky side. Glass tube seems to be very impact resistant. The suction cups will be questionable as most in a submerged setting never seem to hold their grip over time. The plastic temperature dials are a tad tight to adjust. It takes some effort and can''t easily be turned when the heater is mounted to the glass under water. Any adjustment I''ve had to make has to be performed with the heater unplugged and removed from the aquarium. I''m hoping once the calibrating is successful, the adjustments will stop. In the photos you can see both heaters in place and the angle they are at to allow full submersion without tube end touching gravel. Yes, these are long! Time will tell on how good these turn out to be.
